Gwyneth Paltrow recently found herself in the spotlight after winning a trial against a septuagenarian over a 2016 ski collision at a Utah mountain resort. During the trial, Paltrow was seen wearing expensive designer items, including a $5,445 coat from the Row, a $25,000 gold chain from Foundrae and a $325 Smythson notebook. The jury sided with the Hollywood star after her defense attorney James Egan, 37, presented evidence that called into question the recounting of events by Dr. Terry Sanderson, and they were swayed by Paltrow's testimony and pictures of Sanderson travelling the world. In a bizarre turn of events, Sanderson compared Paltrow to Jeffrey Epstein, mentioning the “molesting of young children on an island”. Following the trial, Paltrow was awarded $1.
While the trial may have been low on Courtroom drama, it certainly was high on art direction. Paltrow was seen with a half-liter green glass bottle of Mountain Valley, an Arkansas-based brand that has become a status symbol for the rich and famous. The rise of bottled water as status symbol can be attributed to the '90s, when Evian appeared in the hands of the elite. Celebrities touted its health benefits and other brands soon followed, leading to a decades-long trend. However, with environmental concerns mounting, designer water fell out of fashion for a while, only to be replaced with reusable water bottles. Nonetheless, disposable bottles of status water have never really gone away, with Jennifer Aniston being the glowing face of Smartwater for more than a decade and reality stars stocking their refrigerators with Voss and Flow.
In addition to being at the center of the trial, Paltrow also revealed details about her lifestyle on her podcast, “The Art of Being Well.” She discussed her intermittent fasting, her consumption of bone broth, and adopting a “paleo” diet, full of vegetables. Despite the verdict, the trial has since been viewed by many as a display of Paltrow's austere splendor and Pre-2008 Crash Snootiness. Not to mention, her defense lawyer, James Egan, has become an unexpected heartthrob due to the trial, with Katie Couric expressing her admiration for him during the trial. Egan graduated in 2014 magna cum laude from BYU Law School and is a partner at Epperson & Owens, where he has worked for more than seven years. He is also a singer songwriter and has released two albums. He married a fellow musician in 2018 and became a dad in early last year.
