The Texas Longhorns have achieved a historic victory, advance to the Elite Eight for the first time in 15 years with an 83-71 win over the Xavier Musketeers in Sweet Sixteen. Interim head coach Rodney Terry, who took over after the firing of Chris Beard in December, led the Longhorns to the victory despite the absence of Big 12 tournament MVP Dylan Disu, who had been sidelined due to a foot injury. Tyrese Hunter, Marcus Carr and Christian Bishop proved pivotal in Disu's absence by scoring 19, 18 and 18 points respectively.
The Longhorns kept Xavier's perimeter threats in check while putting life difficult for Jack Nunge down low, and Adam Kunkel led the Musketeers with 21 points. The team was also spurred on by a half court shot by Timmy Allen to close the first half and tributes were paid to Willie Cager, who died on March 19 at the age of 80 and who played for the historic Texas Western team that won the 1966 national title.
The victory puts Texas on Sunday Night up against Miami in the Elite Eight, with Disu's status still uncertain. If the Longhorns can take the win, it will be the first time in 15 years that they advanced to the Final Four.
