The Miami Dolphins made a major move to bolster their roster with the acquisition of six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams and Dolphins agreed to a trade that will send Hunter Long and a third-round pick in the NFL Draft 2023 to the Rams in exchange for Ramsey.
Ramsey, who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016 as fifth overall, is widely regarded as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. The 28-year-old has been selected for six Pro Bowls and three times named a First-Team All-Pro while helping the Rams to win Super Bowl 2022. Last season, he recorded four interceptions and 18 defended passes.
The trade was made possible by the Dolphins releasing Bryon Jones, freeing up $13.6 million in cap space, and Ramsey receiving an additional $25 million guaranteed money over the next two years. The move will pair Ramsey with four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard to form one of the top cornerback tandems of the NFL.
The Dolphins have been active in the offseason making several high-profile moves. This includes acquiring Wide receiver Tyreek Hill in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs and signing pass rusher Bradley Chubb in a trade with the Denver Broncos. Miami reached the AFC playoffs this past season, but lost to the Buffalo Bills in the opening round.
The Rams, who won Super Bowl 2021, have seen several prominent players leave during their championship season. Ramsey was due to receive a $17 million salary for the 2023 season under his current contract which runs through 2025. Los Angeles avoided having to pay him this salary in the trade.
