Since the outbreak of the War between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, the conflict has had a devastating impact on the environment, with tens of thousands killed and immense destruction of land, water and wildlife. Ukraine has requested a United Nations assessment and estimates that Russia has caused $ 51 billion in damage to its environment. To help the nation rebuild and become a stable democracy, Ukraine will need a Marshall Plan-style aid package, a Civilian Conservation Corps to help with the restoration efforts and increased use of renewable energy.

Recently, a petition to change Russia's official name to Muscovy has gained 25,000 signatures, prompting reaction from Russian officials. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has instructed premier Denis Shmygal to "carefully" consider the potential name change. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Zelensky of trying to create an "anti-Russian Ukraine" and Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, rejected the idea.

On the other hand, the Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has argued that protecting Ukraine from the invasion of Russia should not be one of America's "vital national interests". He believes that the Biden administration's "blank check" funding of this conflict without any defined objectives or accountability distracts from the most pressing challenges of the country. DeSantis has also accused the Biden Administration of pushing Russia into "a de facto alliance" with China, further empowering Russia's energy-dominated economy and Putin's war machine.

The United States has sent more than $30 billion in weapons to Ukraine since Russia launched its renewed invasion in February 2022, shipping an increasingly sophisticated arsenal which includes GPS-guided rocket artillery, infantry fighting vehicles and one-way attack drones. The Biden administration has stated that the United States will support Ukraine for “as long as it takes” and the Pentagon is set to focus on expanding the capacity of the defense industry to build more munitions for Ukraine.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is one of the most pressing global challenges of our times, with immense environmental, political and economic implications. The international community must prepare to help Ukraine restore its environment and to protect its sovereignty, while the United States should carefully consider its actions and the long-term implications of its decisions.
