A group of House Democrats and Republicans led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga. ), recently visited Washington, D.C. The Jail where pre-trial defendants from Jan. On June 6, 2021, insurrection are held. The inmates reportedly showed no remorse for their actions, and were treated fairly with access to medical care, tablets for entertainment and the ability to communicate with their families. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif. ) said Republicans rushed to the inmates "like they were celebrities," while Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) reported that the inmates had access to a program that allows them to engage in educational fields, such as law, as well as "little hospital" and dental care. •

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md. ) accused the Republicans of having a "selective sympathy" for the insurrectionists, while Rep. Greene argued that the inmates were being mistreated and subject to a "two-tiered justice system" But, the two democratic lawmakers rejected Greene's description of conditions Jan. Six defendants were in, claiming that they had access to medical care 24 hours a day, tablets for entertainment and the ability to communicate with their families. Crockett also noted that she witnessed 'privileged people' during her visit to the jail. •

Greene and two other GOP legislators had sent a letter to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) earlier this month asked that she direct the D.C. Department of Corrections to arrange for lawmakers to "visit and review" the facilities. After the visit Greene claimed that Jan. Six was not an insurrection. The House Democrats were appalled by the Republicans' "selective sympathy" for the inmates, and called for the media to be able to tour the jail to see the conditions and speak to the defendants.
