Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has publicly voiced her opposition to the potential ban of the popular video sharing app TikTok. In a video posted on the platform, Ocasio-Cortez argued that such an action would be "unprecedented" and has never been taken against a social media company before. She also pointed to the lack of data and privacy protection laws in the United States, claiming that the solution should not be to ban a single company but to protect Americans from the "egregious data harvesting" being conducted by companies. To address the potential national security threats posed by the app, Ocasio-Cortez called for a classified briefing from Congress before any decision is taken. In response to the possible ban, TikTok issued updated community guidelines in an effort to improve content moderation.
