When Flash Shelton, Executive Director of the United Handyman Association, found out that his mother's California home had been invaded by squatters, he was desperate for a solution. He had consulted local police and the sheriff's department, but they could offer no assistance in getting them out. After being turned down by a woman who wanted to rent the house but couldn't offer money or credit, she moved in with her truck of furniture.

Desperate to regain control of his mother's property, Shelton wrote a "lease agreement" with his mother, making him the legal tenant of the property, and traveled to the house armed with a gun for protection. When the squatters returned, he confronted them and told them they had to be out ASAP with all of their stuff. Surprisingly, the conversation remained polite and the anonymous vagabond apologized for the inconvenience and left the next day.

Despite the peaceful resolution of this situation, Shelton cautions others against adopting his approach and stresses that it is not always going to be that way. He emphasizes the importance of consulting local authorities and making sure to follow all legal procedures when dealing with Squatters.
